Two Tier GCSE September 2025

From September 2025 onwards, the new two-tier GCSE will be taught in Wales.
Mathemateg.com has recently been updated to provide resources for this course.
This document (Welsh medium) presents our full scheme of work for the new course.
This document (Welsh medium) maps our provision to the new GCSE specification. (Blue = Year 7; Red = Year 8; Green = Year 9; Purple = Year 10; Yellow = Year 11.)
This spreadsheet (Welsh medium) maps the scheme of work to the new Units 1, 2 and 3.
Here is a video (Welsh medium) summarising the content of all the workbooks:
We have new courses for Years 7 to 11, with resources available on the following pages:
If you are new to the resources, they are organised into 30 workbooks. For example, the third workbook in Year 10 is Measuring Shapes 3. Each workbook is linked with the following resources:
-
The workbook itself, available in Welsh and in English. Editable Microsoft Word versions are available on the relevant year page.
-
An additional tasks pack, available in Welsh and in English. This pack reviews prior work using low-stakes quizzes; Example–Problem pairs; goal free problems; Venn diagram questions; and “SSDD” questions.
-
A pack of “Pop Quiz” questions, available in Welsh and in English, to review a chapter of the workbook after completion.
-
A YouTube playlist of revision videos summarising the topics in the workbook.
-
A multiple-choice quiz on the Diagnostic Questions website, available in Welsh and in English. (Registration is required to use this site, but it is free to use.)
-
Sets of past exam questions. For the Measuring Shapes 3 workbook, sets are available (Welsh medium) for Trigonometry; Enlargement; Composite Shapes; and Arc Length and Sector Area.
Here is a summary of the main changes to the workbooks.
New terminology for Welsh medium:
-
“Buanedd” (old word for speed) has been changed to “cyflymder” (new word for speed), and “cyflymder” (old word for velocity) has been changed to “felosedd” (new word for velocity). The biggest effect is in the Movement with Sphero pack (Year 9) and Developing Algebra 4 (Year 11).
The following topics have been removed:
-
Transformations with a column vector (Welcome to Ysgol y Creuddyn, Coordinates in the Four Quadrants, Measuring Shapes 4).
-
Set notation in Venn diagrams (Factors and Multiples).
-
Finding the perpendicular from a point to a line (Movement with Sphero).
-
Perpendicular bisector and angle bisector using a compass (Movement with Sphero).
-
Exponential graphs (Powers and Roots).
-
Drawing and interpreting graphs of the form \(y = ax + b + \frac{c}{x}\) and \(y = k^x\) (Powers and Roots).
-
Dimensions (Measuring Solids).
-
Tessellations (Measuring Shapes 4).
-
Graph transformations (Developing Algebra 4).
The following topics have been added:
-
Constructing triangles using a protractor and compass (Introducing Angles).
-
Additional material on mortgages; payslips; loans; bank statements; finance plans (Working with Money).
-
Perpendicular bisector and angle bisector using a protractor (Movement with Sphero).
-
Graphical methods for solving quadratic and cubic equations (Powers and Roots).
-
Intermediate values on a line graph; causation in a scatter diagram; expanding a linear bracket with a quadratic bracket; converting area and volume units (End of Year 11).
The following topics have been adapted:
-
Systematic and stratified sampling (to reflect the WJEC mark schemes) (Data Handling and Statistics 4).
-
Information about the exam's format (Fractions, Percentages, and Decimals).
In addition, the following changes have been made to the format of the workbooks and revision videos:
-
The format for labelling revision videos on YouTube has changed. Here is a video (Welsh medium) explaining the changes:
-
All QR codes have been updated (some of the old ones had stopped working).
-
The 'numeracy' material (e.g. numeracy packs, numeracy homework packs) has been moved to the bottom of the pages for each individual year.
Textbooks for each year can be found on this page.
Full answers for the materials, along with end-of-unit tests; end-of-year exams; GCSE mock exams; answers to past exam question packs; and more, are available on request: fill in this form to request access (if you have previously been granted access, you will need to ask for access again to see the new resources).
