Past Examination Papers

Last year, I received a collection of past examination papers dating back to the 1930s, and over the past year I have been digitising them. The papers can be seen on this page.

It is interesting to note how the style of question has changed over the years. In 1938, one of the first questions was on importing wine from France.

It was also required to use tables to answer questions on trigonometry.

In 1941, an interest rate was required.

In 1958, you had to calculate the cost of coal.

And in 1971, binary calculations were required.

It is also interesting to see how the A Level examination has changed over the years. Here is the first question from the paper over the decades...

1970

1980

1990

2010

2019 (no examination in 2020 – COVID).

I wonder if anyone has more papers, to fill the missing years on the page? If so, please e-mail them over to gareth@mathemateg.com.
